His role in the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” as the wild and extremely unhappy ex-delivery boy Eddy was legendary and made him world-famous. The film itself, which also stars Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry, has since become a classic. Meat Loaf sold more than 100 million records worldwide in the six decades of his career and starred in 65 films.

At the age of 20, the musical career of the singer with the voluminous voice began, and he also trained as an actor. He moved to Los Angeles, auditioned for roles in musicals and secured engagements in “Hair” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. He earned praise especially with his role of Eddie in “Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975). Eddie rides into the scenery on his motorbike from an oversized refrigerator and sings the song “Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul”.

During rehearsals for the musical “More Than You Deserve” in 1974, he met the lyricist, composer and music producer Jim Steinman, with whom he created “Bat Out of Hell” shortly afterwards. On the following world tour, the bombastic rocker, who liked to perform in tails, silk scarf and frilly shirt, ruined his four-octave voice. Meat Loaf crashed: Depression and an alcohol addiction took their toll on him. His managers sued him, he was broke, even his friendship with Steinman fell apart. The following records were not very successful.

But Meat Loaf got himself together. At the beginning of the 90s, he reconciled with Steinman after arguments and produced the second “Bat Out of Hell” album with him, which today stands for one of the greatest comebacks in music history. The first single “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” conquered the charts – 16 years after his first international success he was back on top. (Source: ORF)
